In Australia, that would have easily cost three times the price, so needless to say, my jaw hit the floor. Delicious food and stunning river views—what more could you ask for?

I had the privilege of experiencing Brunei’s unparalleled hospitality firsthand when my friend invited me to her family’s home. My friend, the fourth of ten children, lives in a home with her parents that resembles a Beverly Hills mansion—grand double gates, marble staircases, chandeliers, and expansive dining rooms. What truly blew me away, though, was the closeness of her extended family, with her aunts, uncles, and cousins living just down the street in similarly luxurious homes. It’s a perfect example of the deep sense of family and community in Brunei.
Her parents welcomed me with open arms, and I was humbled by their generosity. They insisted that I should have stayed with them rather than at a hotel, offering me a guest room for my next visit.
