Discovering Brunei: My Unexpected Journey to a Hidden Gem in Southeast Asia

Discovering Brunei: My Unexpected Journey to a Hidden Gem in Southeast Asia

November 2023 – a month that will forever be etched in my memory. I had the unique privilege of visiting Brunei, a small, lesser-known kingdom tucked away on the island of Borneo. What began as a visit to see my long time friend and her family turned into a beautiful adventure that shattered every preconceived notion I had about this enigmatic country.

The Unexpected Journey

I first met my friend back in London in 2013 when we both worked at the same job, and over the years, our friendship blossomed alongside that of another colleague who eventually returned to Spain. When my friend moved back to Brunei after completing her degree, I had no idea when I’d see her again. Plans to attend her wedding in 2020 were disrupted by COVID, and though she still married and started a family with two kids, it wasn’t until 2023 that I had the chance to visit.

You see, Brunei wasn’t exactly on my travel radar. My only experience was a brief stopover at their airport, which felt like landing in the heart of a jungle. But let me tell you, this tiny nation completely exceeded my expectations.

A Country of Surprises

As soon as I landed, I was taken aback by how lush and green the landscape was. Everywhere you look, nature thrives, with sprawling jungles and tranquil rivers. The air felt fresh, and the moment my friend picked me up from the airport, I was instantly mesmerized by the beauty of the mosques peeking from the distance, their grandeur echoing Brunei's rich culture and history.

Brunei isn’t just a destination—it’s a genuine cultural experience. The Bruneian people are some of the kindest, most welcoming people I’ve ever encountered. One day, while at the gym (yes, I maintain my fitness even on holiday!), I struggled to adjust the angle on a bench press. A local, noticing my challenge, approached, fixed the equipment, and silently returned to his workout. No awkward small talk, just pure kindness. It’s little moments like these that left me feeling embraced by the warmth of Brunei.

The Safety Factor: A Place Where You Can Truly Relax

One of the things that struck me the most about Brunei was how incredibly safe it felt. There’s a sense of security here that you rarely find in other parts of the world. I saw it firsthand while walking with my friend and her 3-year-old daughter. We strolled down the street without a care, and her little one had the freedom to run around without a second thought. There was no anxiety about keeping her close or worried about strangers—everyone seemed at ease, and the community felt tight-knit. This is a country where safety isn’t just a luxury—it’s the norm, and it’s a rarity that truly stands out.

A Deep Dive into Brunei’s Eco-Tourism

One of the most memorable experiences I had in Brunei was at Eco Ponies Garden, a sustainable oasis dedicated to promoting local plants and food. My friend had met the owner, Eyon Ukoi, through her work, and we spent a magical afternoon learning about the native flora of Brunei, cooking with locally grown ingredients, and embracing a slower, more mindful pace of life. If you’re into sustainability and nature, this is a must-visit spot to learn about the natural bounty of Brunei.

Floating Villages and Rivers of Life

A boat ride to Kampong Ayer, Brunei’s iconic water village, was an unforgettable highlight. This historic village, built on stilts over the Brunei River, is one of the largest of its kind in the world. I was captivated by how the residents live, surrounded by water, and the unique lifestyle they’ve preserved for centuries. Though I didn’t get to tour an open house, my friend told me that some homes welcome tourists to experience daily life in the village. Next time, I’ll definitely be going back for that.

Gastronomic Delights at Kaizen Sushi

If you’re a foodie (and even if you’re not!), Brunei’s culinary scene will blow you away. One night, we dined at Kaizen Sushi, a riverside restaurant that offers some of the freshest sushi I’ve ever tasted. We ordered everything—sushi, oysters, prawns, and scallops—and the cost for 7 people, including drinks and dessert, was an astonishing $160 BND (about $190 AUD). In Australia, that would have easily cost three times the price, so needless to say, my jaw hit the floor. Delicious food and stunning river views—what more could you ask for?

Bruneian Hospitality: A Glimpse into Family Life

I had the privilege of experiencing Brunei’s unparalleled hospitality firsthand when my friend invited me to her family’s home. Brunei’s culture places a strong emphasis on family, and it’s quite common for female children to live with their parents even after marriage. My friend, the fourth of ten children, lives in a home with her parents that resembles a Beverly Hills mansion—grand double gates, marble staircases, chandeliers, and expansive dining rooms. What truly blew me away, though, was the closeness of her extended family, with her aunts, uncles, and cousins living just down the street in similarly luxurious homes. It’s a perfect example of the deep sense of family and community in Brunei.

Her parents welcomed me with open arms, and I was humbled by their generosity. They insisted that I should have stayed with them rather than at a hotel, offering me a guest room for my next visit. They even gave me gifts as a token of appreciation. This kind of genuine hospitality, often understated in Brunei’s quieter reputation, is something that I’ll never forget.

Why Brunei Should Be on Your Travel Bucket List

If you’re looking for a destination that offers a balance of nature, rich culture, delicious food, and heartwarming experiences, Brunei should definitely be on your list. It’s a place that’s easy to overlook but impossible to forget once you experience its unique charm.

Whether you’re exploring floating villages, indulging in affordable gourmet meals, or simply immersing yourself in the warmth of Bruneian hospitality, Brunei offers more than meets the eye. The country’s tranquility, natural beauty, and deep-rooted family values make it an ideal destination for those seeking both adventure and relaxation.

I can honestly say that Brunei exceeded every expectation, and I can’t wait to return. If you’re planning your next getaway, look no further. Brunei is waiting to be discovered.
